How To Fix A Wobbling Ceiling Fan

Ceiling Fan Balance

Is there a problem ceiling fan in your Fort Wayne area home? If it’s wobbling all over the place, it’s likely out of balance. The below article may just be what you need to get it fixed. If you can’t get it fixed yourself, call us at Wismer Contractor Referrals LLC and we will put you in touch with a trusty electrician who will do it for you.  _______________________________

If it’s one thing that really irritates me, it’s a wobbling ceiling fan! Even one that is just a tiny bit out of balance can drive me nuts. I just can’t take my eyes off of one that is wobbling. Here’s another home repair trip that will have you adjusting those fans and getting them running nice and smooth.

Before doing anything, clean the fan blades and the motor housing. I use a dry lint cloth to get all the dirt. Clean them good! You’d be surprised at how little amount of dirt it takes to make a fan wobble!

The next thing you want to do when repairing a wobbling ceiling fan is to check the bolts/screws on the fan blades. Check both the screws hat hold the blade to the arm as well as the screws that hold the arm to the fan motor. If you find any of these loose, tighten them and start the fan to see if it still wobbles. Make sure you operate the ceiling fan on all speeds. I’ve seen more than one fan have a wobble at a certain speed.

Next, check the blades their self. If you find any damaged, bent, warped or otherwise a blade that is different from the others, you may need to replace the fan blades. Wooden blades are more susceptible to damage, especially if they are made out of cheap wood and used in a high humidity area such as along the coastal areas. I’ve seen fan blades drooping so bad that they were hazards to people walking under them.

One time, while having Sunday dinner in a cafe, a blade from a ceiling fan came sailing off and barely missed my daughter who was 4 at the time. To say I was P.O.’d would be an understatement because most of the ceiling fans in that place were unbalanced. I gave the Manager a what for and explained to him that I didn’t want to own the restaurant but that if someone gets hurt from their lack of maintenance on their ceiling fans, they could go ahead and change the name of the restaurant to mine.

On my next visit, all the fans were running smoothly and some of the older ones had even been replaced!

Anyway, back to balancing a wobbling ceiling fan.

If the above measures don’t help balance the ceiling fan, then try taping or gluing coins to the back of the blades until you find the one that is out of balance. You can buy little balancing kits at the Big Box stores or hardware stores, but coins are just as effective and cheaper.

I usually start out with pennies, then nickels and then move up to a quarter if I have to. You’ll be amazed at how smoothly a fan will run when you balance out the blade that is causing all the trouble!

You can also use washers for this if you’re a real cheapo, but I generally have some change in my pocket so it’s just easier to use coins rather than try finding some washers!

Also, be aware that once you find the wobbling blade, you may have to move the weight forward or back on the blade to balance it. Many people assume that they can just put the weight at the end and be done with it. That’s not true and one reason some people can never fix a wobbling ceiling fan!

The Day My Wife Tried To Kill Me

Here it is, as promised; the story of how my wife gave me a shocking experience. We were remodeling our family room and taking out a section of a wall to open the area up. We needed to extend an electrical wire for a light switch. I had shut the power supply off at the breaker box and asked my wife to turn it back on when I said “OK.” I crawled up in the attic, removed the wires from the thermostat switch, and was putting in a junction box to extend the wire. My wife thought she heard me say OK and flipped on the breaker switch and of course I got the JOLT! I yelled… she asked, “whats wrong?” I said, “I GOT BIT!” She said… ”by what?”

A few colorful words, (sorry hun) later directed at my very apologetic wife, I finished the job.

Moral of the story: HIRE AN ELECTRICIAN – Call us at Wismer Contractor Referrals, we’ve got a great one!

Until then, here’s a good post to help you with your CFL flickering troubles. A great new device.

New Dimmer Resolves CFL Flickering Problem

The new Leviton Decora CFL Slide Dimmer

Anyone who has used dimmable CFL bulbs with a standard dimmer is no stranger to the flickering issues inherent in the energy-saving conjunction of the two technologies. Dimming a CFL with a standard dimmer not only results in occasional flickering, it can also lead to limited dimming ranges and a flat out inability to turn the lights on at all when the dimmer is in a certain position.

Enter Leviton’snew Decora CFL Slide Dimmer, launched at the 2010 International Builders’ Show a couple weeks ago. Made specifically to work with the widest range of dimmable CFLs, the Decora CFL Slide Dimmer eliminates the aforementioned issues, optimizing CFL dimming performance. The dimmer’s “auto mode” lets it automatically detect if the bulb being controlled is an incandescent or CFL and adjusts its settings for optimal dimming performance.

Kudos to Leviton for making it more likely we consumers will go even greener in our homes.

No word yet on a cost for the dimmer or the best place to buy, but stay tuned for that info as it comes in.
